Cooper Lake State Park - South Sulphur Unit

The South Sulphur Unit of Cooper Lake State Park sits on a wooded peninsula jutting into Cooper Lake. It offers excellent lakefront camping, a scenic swimming beach, and some of the best crappie fishing in northeast Texas. The diverse woodland habitat makes it a terrific birding destination.

When to Go

April through October. Spring crappie season draws anglers. Summer weekends fill up but midweek is usually available.

  • Spring crappie fishing here is some of the best in Texas
  • The peninsula trail offers great sunrise views over the lake
  • Pack a swimsuit — the beach is excellent for kids
  • Bring firewood or buy at the park store (seasonal)
