Lake Tawakoni State Park provides lakefront camping on a 36,700-acre reservoir east of Dallas. The park features 5 miles of shoreline, a sandy swimming beach, and wooded campsites in the Post Oak Belt. It is well-known for catfish and striped bass fishing.

When to Go

March through October. Summer weekends fill up due to DFW proximity. The fishing pier draws anglers year-round.

Tips

  • The swimming beach is one of the best at any Texas state park
  • Catfish fishing is excellent — try cut bait near the dam
  • Summer spider webs along the trails can be impressive (and a bit spooky)
  • Book 2-3 months out for weekend camping in spring and fall
