How to Get a Reservation at Enchanted Rock

The honest step-by-step guide — including what to do when it's sold out.

1

Know when the window opens

Texas state parks accept reservations exactly 5 months in advance. To camp on October 15, reservations open May 15 at midnight Central Time. Mark your calendar — popular Enchanted Rock weekends sell out in the first 10 minutes.

2

Set your alarm for 11:58 PM

Log into your Texas State Parks account before midnight. Have your site preference, dates, and payment info ready. The booking page opens at midnight — don't wait until morning. By 12:05 AM on peak weekends, the best sites are gone.

3

Pick your loop strategically

All 60 sites are walk-in tent only — no RVs. Loop A (sites 1–20) has the most boulder cover and privacy. Loop B (sites 41–60) is closest to restrooms. Loop C (sites 21–35) splits the difference. Primitive backpack sites (BK1–BK5) require a short hike and offer complete solitude.

4

If it's sold out — set a cancellation alert

This is how most people actually get Enchanted Rock. Cancellations happen constantly — people's plans change. Camp.land scans every 30 minutes and emails you the moment a site opens with a direct booking link. Act fast: popular sites are re-booked within minutes.

Stargazing at Enchanted Rock

Enchanted Rock is a certified International Dark Sky Park — one of only a handful in Texas. The combination of granite dome elevation, minimal light pollution from Fredericksburg (11 miles west), and wide-open horizons makes it exceptional.

On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way core with the naked eye from any campsite, and the summit gives you 360° of unobstructed sky. The walk up takes about 20 minutes in the dark — bring a headlamp, wear layers, and find a flat granite slab near the top.

Best months

Dec – Feb (darkest skies, fewest clouds)

Best conditions

New moon nights, low humidity

Pro tip

Primitive backpack sites have the least nearby light

Enchanted Rock Camping FAQ

Does Enchanted Rock allow RVs?+

No. All campsites at Enchanted Rock are walk-in tent only. There are no hookups, no RV pads, and no generators. The walk from the parking lot to your campsite ranges from about 100 yards (Loop B) to 0.3 miles (Loop A).

What happens when Enchanted Rock reaches capacity?+

The entrance gate closes to day visitors once the park hits its capacity limit — often by 10 AM on busy weekends. Campers with a valid reservation are always allowed in. This is one of the biggest advantages of having a campsite: guaranteed access on days when thousands of visitors get turned away.

Can I hike Enchanted Rock without camping?+

Yes — day use passes are available. But they sell out fast on weekends, often weeks in advance, and the park frequently closes to new arrivals by mid-morning. If you want guaranteed access on a specific day, a camping reservation is the only reliable option.

How hard is the Enchanted Rock summit hike?+

The main trail to the summit is 0.6 miles each way with about 425 feet of elevation gain over exposed granite. It's rated moderate — most people with average fitness can do it, though the slick-rock surface can be challenging for young children. There's no trail; you follow painted arrows up the rock.

Is Enchanted Rock pet-friendly?+

Yes. Dogs are allowed on trails and at campsites on a 6-foot leash. They are not allowed inside park buildings. Bring water for your dog — the granite surface gets extremely hot in summer.
