Monahans Sandhills State Park
Monahans Sandhills State Park protects 3,840 acres of active sand dunes up to 70 feet tall in the Permian Basin of West Texas. Visitors can rent sand discs to surf down the dunes, explore the interpretive center, or simply enjoy one of the most unique landscapes in the state. Camping here feels like sleeping in the Sahara.

For Families:Sites 1-15 (Dune View) — water/electric, close to dunes and visitor center
For Privacy:Sites 16-26 (Desert Camp) — more secluded, quieter

When to Go
October through April. Summer is brutally hot (110°F+). Spring break draws families for sand surfing.
Tips
- →Rent sand discs at the visitor center — sliding down dunes is a blast
- →Visit at sunset — the light on the dunes is magical
- →Summer camping is not recommended — sand surface temperatures can burn
- →Good overnight stop between Dallas and Big Bend or Carlsbad Caverns
