Why Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site Is Hard to Book

Hueco Tanks is one of the most unique destinations in Texas — a cluster of syenite rock formations that have collected rainwater in natural basins (huecos) for thousands of years, creating an oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert. The park holds over 3,000 pieces of Native American pictograph art, some of the finest rock art in North America. It's also a world-class rock climbing destination, drawing climbers from around the globe for its bouldering problems. Daily visitor permits are strictly limited to protect the fragile site, and the 20 campsites book up weeks in advance for climbing season. This is a bucket-list Texas park.

Booking Tips

When to Go

October through April is climbing season and peak visitation — sites and day permits book up fast. Summer is extremely hot and most serious visitors avoid July–August. Spring break is particularly crowded.
