Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site

Hueco Tanks is one of the most unique destinations in Texas — a cluster of syenite rock formations that have collected rainwater in natural basins (huecos) for thousands of years, creating an oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert. The park holds over 3,000 pieces of Native American pictograph art, some of the finest rock art in North America. It's also a world-class rock climbing destination, drawing climbers from around the globe for its bouldering problems. Daily visitor permits are strictly limited to protect the fragile site, and the 20 campsites book up weeks in advance for climbing season. This is a bucket-list Texas park.

Guide to Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site

Best Campsites

For Families:East Mountain campsites — closest to the visitor center and family-friendly trails
For Privacy:West Mountain area — fewer visitors, more secluded feel
For RVs:Limited hookup sites available — call ahead to confirm availability
For Couples:Any site mid-week — the limited permit system means midweek is dramatically quieter

When to Go

October through April is climbing season and peak visitation — sites and day permits book up fast. Summer is extremely hot and most serious visitors avoid July–August. Spring break is particularly crowded.

Tips

  • Daily visitor permits are limited — book camping first, day permits are separate and also limited
  • Self-guided areas are limited to East Mountain — North and West Mountains require a guided tour
  • Rock climbing requires a separate climbing permit
  • Bring significant water — the desert heat is unforgiving even in winter
  • The visitor center has an excellent museum of the pictograph history — worth the time
