Hueco Tanks is a cluster of syenite rock formations that collect rainwater in natural basins, an oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert. The park holds over 3,000 pieces of Native American pictograph art. It is also a world-class bouldering destination. Daily visitor permits are strictly limited. Book camping first. Day permits are separate and also limited. Rock climbing requires a separate climbing permit. Self-guided areas are limited to East Mountain. North and West Mountains require a guided tour.

Families at Hueco Tanks usually want a water-and-electric site. The electrical hookup and nearby restrooms make family stays easier. Larger rigs should target one of the 16 water-and-electric 50-amp sites first. They go fastest. The 4 water-only sites are simpler and cheaper, a good pick for a quiet tent stay outside of climbing season.
