The park publishes 20 total sites in El Paso, about 8 hours 30 minutes from Austin, and a $7 entrance fee. Camp.land does not run alerts for Texas parks. Hueco Tanks is a cluster of syenite rock formations that collect rainwater in natural basins, an oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert. The park holds over 3,000 pieces of Native American pictograph art. It is also a world-class bouldering destination. Daily visitor permits are strictly limited. Book camping first. Day permits are separate and also limited. Rock climbing requires a separate climbing permit. Self-guided areas are limited to East Mountain. North and West Mountains require a guided tour.

Families at Hueco Tanks usually want a water-and-electric site. The electrical hookup and nearby restrooms make family stays easier. Larger rigs should target one of the 16 water-and-electric 50-amp sites first. They go fastest. The 4 water-only sites are simpler and cheaper, a good pick for a quiet tent stay outside of climbing season.
Hueco Tanks State Park does not list park-owned cabins. Mid-week stays are quieter because the limited permit system keeps the whole park down. Bring significant water. The desert heat is unforgiving even in winter. The visitor center museum of pictograph history is worth the time.
Missed the five-month release at Hueco Tanks? Cancellations still happen. Cancelled sites go straight back into ReserveAmerica, where anyone can book them. The realistic window to check is two to four weeks before your date, when early cancellation penalties are still low enough that fence-sitters bail.
