Why Possum Is Hard to Book

Possum Kingdom State Park is one of Texas's most popular state parks. Reservations open 5 months in advance and popular weekends sell out within minutes. Cancellations happen constantly — people's plans change — but they go fast.

What Makes It Worth the Effort

Booking Tips

• The water really is that blue — it's the limestone geology of the lake bed, not a filter
• Hell's Gate (the famous cliff-jumping spot) is outside the park on private land — check access before you go

May through September for lake swimming and boating. Summer weekends book up fast. Spring and fall are less crowded and still beautiful for hiking and fishing.
