Lockhart State Park is a compact, CCC-built gem just 40 minutes south of Austin. It features a rare 9-hole golf course (one of only two state park golf courses in Texas), a spring-fed swimming pool, and shaded camping along Clear Fork Creek. And of course, the BBQ capital of Texas is right next door in Lockhart.

When to Go

March through November. Small campground means it fills up fast on weekends. Book 2-3 months out.

Tips

→Play the 9-hole golf course — it is beautifully maintained and very affordable
→Drive into Lockhart for BBQ at Kreuz Market, Smitty's, or Black's
→The swimming pool is open Memorial Day through Labor Day
→Small campground — book early or try midweek
