The Birch Creek Unit of Lake Somerville State Park sits on the north shore of Lake Somerville, connected to the Nails Creek Unit by a 13-mile trail. It offers equestrian and mountain biking trails through post-oak woodland, plus lakefront camping and excellent fishing. Popular with Houston and Austin visitors alike.

When to Go

March through November. Equestrian events fill up fast. Regular camping is generally available with a few weeks notice.

Tips

  • Hike or bike the 13-mile trail between Birch Creek and Nails Creek for an adventure
  • Bring your horse — the equestrian trails and facilities are excellent
  • Spring wildflowers in the post-oak woodland are beautiful
  • Lake levels can drop in drought — check conditions before planning water activities
