Why Government Canyon State Natural Area Is Hard to Book

Government Canyon is San Antonio's backyard wilderness — over 12,000 acres of limestone canyons, ancient fossils, and 40 miles of trails just 25 minutes from downtown. The camping here is all walk-in tent sites, which means no RVs, no generators, and a dramatically quieter experience than most Texas state parks. You'll hear coyotes at night and see deer at dawn. The park has significant scientific value too — it sits atop the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone and preserves some of the best dinosaur tracks in the state. Permits are limited, which means sites book up fast for weekends.
