Bentsen is unlike most Texas state parks: the camping table holds just five walk-in tent sites, a 3/4-mile hike from parking, with no hookups of any kind and no roofed lodging. Winter - December through February - is peak season, when the greatest bird diversity shows up and the five sites are hardest to hold. World Birding Center infrastructure makes the day-use experience the real draw.
The practical play for a birding trip is a base in Mission or neighboring McAllen - a normal house or casita with a kitchen and air conditioning - and day-use mornings in the park. The Rio Grande Valley has a deep short-term-rental market because of winter Texans, and it books on Vrbo.
