Government Canyon is San Antonio's backyard wilderness: over 12,000 acres of limestone canyons, ancient fossils, and 40 miles of trails about 25 minutes from downtown. Camping is walk-in tent only. No RVs, no generators. Daily visitor permit limits are strict, and you must have a reservation to camp. The park sits atop the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone and can close during heavy rain.

Weekday nights are quietest. Couples can take any of the standard walk-in tent sites, pack in light, and get a quiet canyon evening.
Government Canyon State Natural Area does not list park-owned cabins and does not list RV sites. Bring a headlamp for the short walk back. Water is available near the campsites, but bring at least 2 liters per person per day for the trails. Mountain biking is allowed on most trails.

The realistic window to check is two to four weeks before your date, when early cancellation penalties are still low enough that fence-sitters bail.

March through May is prime time at Government Canyon State Natural Area: wildflowers and cooler hiking. Fall weekends fill next. The Joe Johnston Route is a 10-mile scenic loop through the canyon. Dark skies are far enough from San Antonio light pollution for good stargazing.
