Texas State Parks Open in December
All 81 Texas state parks are open in December. There are no seasonal closures for the Texas system — parks operate year-round. December is actually one of the best months to camp in Texas, with dramatically better availability and far smaller crowds than spring or summer.
Why December Is Underrated
Most Texans think of camping as a spring-to-fall activity. That perception works in your favor in December. Parks that are sold out 4 months in advance during summer often have open campsites available with a week's notice in December. You can book Garner State Park or Enchanted Rock — parks that require an 8 a.m. booking sprint in May — with a normal reservation in early December.
The one exception: the week between Christmas and New Year's Day sees a meaningful spike in demand. If you want Dec 26-31 at a popular park, book early.
Best Parks for a December Trip
Lost Maples State Natural Area — The fall color window typically runs into late November, and the park remains beautiful through December even after peak color. Quiet, cold mornings on the Sabinal River with almost no crowds.
Big Bend Ranch State Park — West Texas winters are ideal for hiking. Daytime temperatures in the 60s, almost no bugs, and some of the darkest skies in Texas. Star-gazing in December from Big Bend is extraordinary.
Enchanted Rock — The crowds that make fall weekends competitive thin out significantly by December. Sunrise summit hikes in cool, clear air with no heat are excellent. Granite holds heat from daytime sun, making rocky summit camping surprisingly comfortable.
Goose Island State Park — The Texas coast is mild in December. Goose Island on Aransas Bay offers excellent birding (whooping crane season peaks in December), fishing, and waterfront camping with relatively warm temperatures.
What to Expect Weather-Wise
- ✓South Texas coast — Daytime 60-70°F, nights rarely below 45°F
- ✓Hill Country — Daytime 50-60°F, nights can reach 28-35°F; layer up
- ✓West Texas — Daytime 55-65°F, nights can freeze; sleeping bag rated to 20°F recommended
- ✓East Texas — Milder and humid; occasional fog; Piney Woods parks are green and quiet
What Is Closed or Limited in December
Swimming holes and river swimming are generally not recommended (water temps in the 50s-60s). Some concession stands and canoe rentals close or reduce hours. A few of the smaller parks may reduce staffing. Call ahead if you need a specific amenity like a boat ramp or camp store. The parks themselves are open.
