Every number below comes from the live Rocky Mountain and Great Sand Dunes pages on this site, which track the recreation.gov campgrounds we watch for cancellations.
Rocky Mountain is the bigger booking with three times the sites: Moraine Park (236 sites, 45 of them electric) plus Glacier Basin (149) near Estes Park, against Great Sand Dunes' single Pinyon Flats campground (89 sites) near Alamosa. If you want the widest date choice and hookups, Rocky Mountain wins. If you want the strangest landscape your kids will ever sleep next to, the dunes win.
Rocky Mountain runs two monitored campgrounds near Estes Park: Moraine Park with 236 sites including 45 electric standard sites, and Glacier Basin with 149 sites split between tent-only and standard. Great Sand Dunes answers with one campground, Pinyon Flats: 89 sites (52 RV with no hookups, 34 tent-only, 3 group) steps from the tallest dunes in North America.
Rocky Mountain is the fuller trip: elk in the mornings, Trail Ridge Road, and a real gateway town in Estes Park when the kids need pizza. Great Sand Dunes is a tighter, stranger wonder: hike the dunes at dawn before the sand heats up, splash Medano Creek in spring, and be done in a day or two. Both are high elevation, so pack layers even in July.
All three campgrounds book on recreation.gov. Set a free alert for your exact dates and we email the moment a cancellation opens. Sold out anyway? Cabins around Estes Park or Alamosa book on Vrbo as the fallback.

Want the booking playbook?
Rocky Mountain is the bigger booking with three times the sites: Moraine Park (236 sites, 45 of them electric) plus Glacier Basin (149) near Estes Park, against Great Sand Dunes' single Pinyon Flats campground (89 sites) near Alamosa. If you want the widest date choice and hookups, Rocky Mountain wins. If you want the strangest landscape your kids will ever sleep next to, the dunes win.
Pinyon Flats has fewer than 90 sites for the entire park, so it sells through fast in summer despite being the smaller name. Rocky Mountain spreads demand across 385 sites at two campgrounds, and its electric Moraine Park loop books first. Set alerts at both parks and take whichever cancellation lands.
