Garner State Park weekends — especially June through August — are the most competitive campsite bookings in Texas. The Frio River draws every San Antonio and Austin family, and the park's 327 sites fill in under a minute when the 5-month window opens. Here is what actually works.

A Friday or Saturday night at Garner from Memorial Day through Labor Day is, practically speaking, impossible to book through normal channels unless you are at your computer at exactly 8 a.m. Central on booking day — which is exactly 5 months before your target date. The screened shelters on the Frio River go in under 30 seconds.
That is not a reason to give up. It is a reason to use a better strategy.
Log in to ReserveAmerica at 7:55 a.m. with your campsite pre-selected, dates entered, and payment info saved. The moment reservations open at 8:00 a.m., complete the transaction without pausing. Have a second tab open with your second-choice site. Do not read descriptions mid-checkout.
Cancellations happen at Garner year-round, and weekend cancellations spike in the 10-14 days before a trip. Someone books a June weekend in January, then a work conflict comes up in May. That site goes back into availability — and someone with an alert gets it.
Camp.land does not scan Garner for cancellations. Check ReserveAmerica yourself during the 10-14 day window before your trip, since that is when most cancellations happen.
September and October weekends at Garner are dramatically more available and, honestly, a better experience. The Frio River runs at its clearest in fall. Temperatures drop into the 70s. The famous nightly dance ends with summer, but the park itself is just as beautiful.
April weekends are also easier than summer and still warm enough for river swimming. Spring wildflowers in the surrounding Hill Country are an added bonus.
A Thursday-Sunday or Friday-Monday trip gives you a genuine weekend experience with far less booking competition. Thursday nights at Garner are available for summer months several weeks in advance. Book Thursday and you are already in camp when everyone else is trying to arrive Friday.
