Kickapoo Cavern State Park
Kickapoo Cavern is one of Texas's most underrated hidden gems — a remote southwest Texas park that's home to one of the longest cave systems in the state and a spectacular nightly bat flight. From spring through fall, up to 1 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from Green Cave at dusk in a swirling, 30-minute spectacle that's as mesmerizing as anything at Enchanted Rock or the Congress Avenue Bridge. The camping is simple and the location is quiet — you won't find crowds here. The cave tours reveal stunning formations and the remoteness of the location means genuinely dark night skies.

When to Go
April through October for bat flights — the bats are in residence spring through fall migration. Cave tours run year-round on weekends. Summer evenings are warm but the bat flight is worth it. The park is rarely crowded.
Tips
- →Reserve cave tours in advance — they run only on weekends and fill up
- →Arrive at the bat cave amphitheater 30 minutes before sunset for the best viewing spot
- →Bring binoculars — the bat flight is incredible from the viewing area but binoculars add detail
- →The park is extremely remote — fill up on gas and groceries in Brackettville before heading in
- →Cell service is essentially nonexistent — download maps and entertainment before you arrive
