Texas State Parks with Waterfront Camping

Texas has more than 80 state parks, and a solid number of them put you within steps of a river, lake, or the Gulf Coast. Waterfront sites book faster and are harder to get than standard sites — but they exist across the state, from Hill Country rivers to coastal bays to East Texas reservoirs.

Best River Camping in Texas State Parks

Garner State Park — Frio River is the benchmark. The screened shelters sit directly on the riverbank; you fall asleep to the sound of the Frio. At 68°F year-round, the river is one of the best swimming destinations in the state. These sites are the hardest to book in the entire Texas system.

Pedernales Falls State Park offers river access from the campground loops, with a designated swim hole on the Pedernales River a short walk from camp.

Colorado Bend State Park on the Colorado River is one of the most underrated river-camping parks in Texas. Less-known than Garner or Pedernales Falls, it often has open sites when the Hill Country marquee parks are booked solid. Gorman Falls — a 70-foot waterfall — is a 3-mile round-trip hike from camp.

Lost Maples State Natural Area sits on the Sabinal River. Campsites are not right on the water but are within easy walking distance. Fall color plus river access makes October the peak demand month here.

Best Lakefront Camping

Possum Kingdom State Park sits on Possum Kingdom Lake in the Palo Pinto Mountains. Several campsites overlook the lake directly. The lake is known for clear water and cliff jumping.

Lake Brownwood State Park offers waterfront sites on Lake Brownwood with a boat ramp and fishing dock. Availability is better here than at Hill Country parks.

Inks Lake State Park in the Highland Lakes chain is a Hill Country gem — granite outcroppings, clear water, and campsites close to the lake. Less competitive than Garner but still books 2-3 months out on weekends.

Coastal and Bay Camping

Goose Island State Park near Rockport sits on Aransas Bay. Waterfront sites look directly over the bay — some of the best water views in the state system. December through March is peak birding season here (whooping cranes winter on the nearby refuge).

Mustang Island State Park on the Gulf Coast offers beach camping on the barrier island. Walk-in beach sites put you literally on the sand. Summer weekends are competitive; fall and winter are dramatically easier to book and the weather is often nicer.

How to Get Waterfront Sites

Waterfront sites within any park sell out first. At Garner, the river shelters go in 30 seconds. At Goose Island, bay-view sites book weeks before standard sites. Your best bet for sold-out waterfront sites is a cancellation alert. Camp.land monitors every park every 10 minutes — when a specific site type opens, you hear about it immediately.
