How Far in Advance to Book Texas State Park Camping

The short answer: 5 months (150 days) in advance at 8 a.m. Central is when reservations open for Texas state parks. For popular parks on peak weekends, that opening moment is when you must book. The longer answer depends on which park and which season you are targeting.

The 5-Month Booking Window

Texas state parks use a rolling 150-day (5-month) reservation window on ReserveAmerica. Every morning at 8 a.m. Central, a new day of availability opens exactly 150 days in the future. If your target arrival date is June 14, the booking window for that date opens on January 14 at 8 a.m.

This is the maximum how-far-in-advance you can book — not the minimum. If a site is still available, you can book it the week before your trip, the day before, or even the day of (subject to availability).

How Far in Advance by Park Type

Must book on opening day (5 months out):

  • Garner State Park — summer weekends gone in under 60 seconds
  • Enchanted Rock — 60 sites gone in under 3 minutes
  • Lost Maples — October/November fall color weekends sell out opening day
  • Pedernales Falls — spring and fall weekends book within hours of opening

Book 1-3 months out for weekends:

  • Inks Lake, Bastrop, Buescher, Huntsville — popular but not instantly sold-out
  • Goose Island — summer bay-view sites book 6-8 weeks out
  • Mustang Island — Gulf Coast sites book 1-2 months out for summer

Book 1-4 weeks out (or less):

  • East Texas parks (Caddo Lake, Tyler, Martin Creek Lake) — lower demand year-round
  • North Texas reservoir parks (Ray Roberts, Lake Whitney, Possum Kingdom) — midweek
  • Any park, off-season (December-January) — availability opens up dramatically

How to Book on the Exact Opening Day

Log into ReserveAmerica by 7:55 a.m. with your target campsite pre-selected, date range entered, and payment method saved. At exactly 8:00 a.m., complete the transaction without pausing. For the most competitive parks (Garner, Enchanted Rock), have a second tab open with your backup site choice. The difference between booking in 30 seconds versus 3 minutes can determine whether you get a site.

Missed the Window? Cancellation Alerts Work

Camp.land monitors all 81 Texas state parks every 10 minutes. When a site opens — whether it is a last-minute cancellation or someone dropping a reservation 4 months out — you get an immediate email. Most members who get popular parks do so through a cancellation alert rather than the opening-day window.
