Which Texas State Parks Have the Best Swimming?

Texas has some of the best freshwater swimming in the country — spring-fed rivers that stay cool even in July heat. Here are the best swimming parks, ranked.

Top Swimming Parks

1. Garner State Park — Frio River

The gold standard. The Frio River runs at 68°F year-round through limestone canyons. Crystal clear, multiple swimming areas, rope swings. The hardest campsite to book in Texas — and worth every effort.

2. Inks Lake State Park

Spring-fed Highland Lakes water that stays remarkably clear. Devil's Waterhole — a series of granite-edged swimming holes — is one of the most photographed spots in Texas.

3. Pedernales Falls State Park

Natural limestone swimming holes on the Pedernales River. Water levels vary with rainfall but when conditions are right, it is stunning. Check current conditions before going.

4. South Llano River State Park

One of the clearest rivers in Texas. Less crowded than Garner, with excellent swimming and kayaking. The turkey roost viewing adds a wildlife dimension few swimming parks can match.

5. Guadalupe River State Park

Closest Hill Country river park to San Antonio and Austin. The Guadalupe runs cool and clear, with great tubing and swimming. Busier than South Llano but much closer to the cities.

6. Balmorhea State Park — San Solomon Springs

A desert oasis fed by 22-26 million gallons of spring water daily. The pool stays at 72-76°F year-round. Scuba diving and snorkeling available. Unique among Texas state parks.

Booking Tips for Swimming Parks

All the top swimming parks are extremely difficult to book for summer weekends. The Frio River parks (Garner, South Llano) are booked months in advance. Set Camp.land alerts for any of these parks and we will notify you immediately when a campsite opens.
