Best Texas State Parks for Fall Camping
Fall is the best camping season in Texas — full stop. The brutal summer heat breaks, the crowds thin, the light turns golden, and in a few special places, the leaves actually change color. October and November transform what was an endurance test in August into some of the most beautiful camping conditions in the country.
1. Lost Maples State Natural Area — The Fall Foliage Destination
Lost Maples is Texas's answer to the fall foliage destinations of New England — scaled down, but genuinely spectacular. Bigtooth maples tucked into the limestone canyons of the Sabinal River turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and gold, typically peaking in late October or early November depending on the year.
The campground books out months in advance for peak foliage weekends. Check the Texas Parks and Wildlife foliage report that posts weekly in October — when the report says "near peak," the camping windows for that weekend will vanish within hours. Book the moment the 5-month window opens for your target October weekend.
2. Garner State Park — Hill Country in Cool Weather
Garner is best known for summer, but it is genuinely excellent in fall. The Frio River is still swimmable through September and into early October (spring-fed at about 68 degrees year-round). The canyon walls glow in the autumn light. And without the summer crowds, you can actually enjoy the park instead of navigating around packed campsites.
3. Colorado Bend State Park — Remote and Stunning in Fall
Fall is the ideal time for Colorado Bend. Gorman Falls is flowing, temperatures are comfortable for the hike, and the park's dark skies are incredible on cool October nights. The primitive river sites are peaceful in a way they simply cannot be when temperatures are over 100 degrees.
4. Pedernales Falls State Park — Hill Country Canyon Beauty
The Pedernales River and its layered limestone waterfalls are stunning in fall light. The swimming holes that were packed in August belong to you and a few other people in October. Hiking the canyon trails with comfortable temperatures is a completely different experience than fighting the heat.
5. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area — Stargazing Season
Fall brings dry, clear skies to the Hill Country — perfect for the renowned stargazing at Enchanted Rock. Cool nights make sleeping in a tent comfortable. The famous pink granite dome glows in the low autumn sun. And camping here in October feels like a completely different park than the July scorcher version.
